One research object. Many useful forms. No novelty by typography.

A durable research object can become a paper, essay, model or piece of software. Before any of those forms claim a contribution, the project should establish what the literature already knows and what, if anything, remains to add.

Lineage gate

No numbered paper without a prior-art position.

Each paper must say what it inherits before saying what it contributes.

The living novelty register classifies candidate contributions as established antecedent, independent rediscovery, synthesis, extension, application, operationalization, terminology candidate, novelty unassessed or, only after substantial search, candidate novelty.

Finding a close antecedent is a reason to improve the paper, not to hide the citation.

Epistemic status

Publication is not certification.

A public artefact can be valuable before its curator can defend every part of it.

Working Paper 001 now cites close prior work on verification gaps, metacognition and claim accountability, and v0.4 further grounds its machine-discovery discussion in decades of computational-discovery, collective-discovery and scientific-priority scholarship.

Contribution & authority

Use standards before inventing roles.

CRediT for contribution. W3C PROV for provenance. RO-Crate for packaging.

Agalmic-specific metadata is reserved for claim-level epistemic authority, handoff, branch state, search boundaries and reversal conditions where mature standards do not adequately capture the research question.

Working paper → peer-reviewed article → public essay → policy brief → talk → model → code.

These are projections of the same evolving research object. Stable versions should retain provenance, contribution roles, lineage status and corrections rather than presenting each release as an immaculate new beginning.

  • GitHub: source, models, data, standards-compatible provenance and version history.
  • RO-Crate: package research objects with interoperable metadata where feasible.
  • Research archives: stable snapshots through Zenodo, OSF or SSRN where suitable.
  • Peer review: domain scrutiny selected paper by paper, especially where the curator lacks authority.
