1 · The tension
Idea abundance feels like wealth because it is.
In a cognition-scarce environment, forming an interesting hypothesis, design or connection can itself be expensive. Machine cognition changes that experience. Possibilities arrive faster than one person can evaluate, integrate or realize them.
The natural temptation is to convert every promising branch into an obligation. That destroys much of the value of abundance by turning optionality into overload.
An idea can be worth preserving even when it is not worth pursuing now.
2 · Intellectual lineage
This is a practical synthesis, not a new theory of project selection.
March's exploration/exploitation literature establishes the resource tension between searching new possibilities and exploiting existing knowledge. Innovation portfolio-management research studies how organizations select and balance projects under scarce resources. Real-options approaches to R&D explicitly value the flexibility to defer, expand or abandon uncertain projects as information arrives.
Idea-management and creativity research also shows that generating ideas is not the same as recognizing and selecting the best ones. Selection itself is difficult and can be biased against uncertain, original possibilities.
The local contribution of this note is simply to apply those established insights to an individual researcher using machine cognition intensely.
3 · Preserve option value
Capture is not commitment.
Real-options thinking suggests a useful analogy: under uncertainty, the right to act later can have value even when immediate full commitment does not.
For research, preservation can be extremely cheap: record the idea, its provenance, why it mattered, its relation to other work, its publication sensitivity and the condition that would make it worth revisiting.
Once preserved, the idea no longer has to occupy working memory or generate guilt merely because it is interesting.

Commitment grows only when information improves.
4 · The Active Frontier
Scarcity belongs here.
The possibility set can be large. The active set should not be.
Agalmic Research currently uses a default work-in-progress limit of three substantial active bets. That limit is not a scientific constant. It is a deliberately visible constraint intended to force comparison between attractive possibilities.
When a fourth candidate appears, the question is not “Can we also do this?” It is:
Is this now a better use of scarce attention than the weakest active commitment?
That converts prioritization from additive enthusiasm into portfolio choice.
5 · Directional meaning
Interesting is not enough.
A serious candidate should eventually answer a harder question:
If this succeeds, what worthwhile future becomes more reachable?
It may create reusable knowledge, better search, stronger validation, a new representation, a collaborator, a piece of software, an experimental capability, a cheaper process, a useful negative result or a route toward realization.
If the only result is another attractive idea, preservation may be the right outcome.
6 · Buy information before buying projects
Prefer the cheapest action that could change your mind.
Instead of asking whether an idea deserves months of work, ask what small action could most efficiently determine whether it deserves another hour.
That action might be a literature search, back-of-the-envelope calculation, adversarial critique, expert question, prototype, user test, formal proof attempt or experiment.
This keeps uncertainty attached to the option rather than prematurely hiding it inside a project plan.
7 · Personal abundance
The aim is not intellectual austerity.
Restricting idea generation would throw away one of the pleasures and genuine benefits of cognitive tools. The better response is architectural.
Let the possibility space be abundant. Keep commitment scarce.
A good preservation system makes saying “not now” much easier because “not now” no longer means “lost.” A good frontier system makes saying “yes” more meaningful because active work has survived comparison with alternatives.
This is the personal counterpart of the wider economics of epistemic abundance: when candidate cognition becomes cheap, selection, attention, validation and realization become precious.
